In his spiritual testament dated June 29, 2022, Pope Francis laid out some of his burial requests — simpler compared to traditional rites — and his continued call for peace in the world.

Francis wished his remains to be buried in the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome instead of at the St. Peter’s Basilica, where St. Peter is believed to be and many past popes are laid.

“Throughout my life, and during my ministry as a priest and bishop, I have always entrusted myself to the Mother of Our Lord, the Blessed Virgin Mary. For this reason, I ask that my mortal remains rest – awaiting the day of the Resurrection – in the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major,” the pope testated.

“The tomb should be in the ground; simple, without particular ornamentation, bearing only the inscription: Franciscus,” the testament also reads.

Pope Francis ended his 2022 spiritual testament, in his fashion and consistent calls throughout his world peace, as he stated, “The suffering that has marked the final part of my life, I offer to the Lord, for peace in the world and for fraternity among peoples.”

On November 20, 2024, the Vatican announced that among the deceased pope’s wishes are to be buried in a wooden coffin instead of three interlocking caskets made of cypress, lead, and oak, among other plans—breaking off from centuries-long practices for papal burials.

As of press time, Pope Francis’ remains lie at the chapel in Casa Santa Marta, his papal residence. The Holy See has also yet to announce the schedule of the funeral rites for the pope, and the conclave where Francis’ successor will be elected among cardinals aged 80 and below.
