After being the first Filipino in the Open era to compete at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships Centre Court, Alex Eala concluded her run in both women’s singles and doubles with an early exit on July 3.

Eala began her campaign in the women’s singles with a stunning performance, toppling defending champion Barbora Krejčíková through aggressive court coverage and clean shot-making. She took the opening set convincingly, 6–3.

However, despite the momentum Eala had built, the Czech veteran quickly recovered, enhancing her baseline command and minimizing errors in the second set, where Eala struggled with mistakes that allowed Krejčíková to take the set, 2–6.

In the decisive third set, Eala lost her rhythm as Krejčíková dictated the rallies, ultimately closing out the match with a dominant 6–1 scoreline to seal the first-round victory.

Marking another milestone, Eala also made her debut in the doubles category, partnering with Germany’s Eva Lys. Despite their spirited effort, the duo was eliminated on the same day by the pair of Quinn Gleason and Ingrid Martins, who secured a straight-sets victory, 6–4, 6–2.

In the first match of the opening set, the Filipina-German tandem held an early advantage. However, Gleason and Martins rallied back in a tightly contested set, eventually pulling ahead to take it 6–4.

Though Eala and Lys claimed the opening game of the second set, their momentum quickly faded as their opponents won four consecutive games and closed out the match, 6–2.

This ended Filipina’s run in the competition, finishing both her singles and doubles matches.

Despite her exit, Eala expressed her gratitude for making history as the first Filipina to reach the main draw of Wimbledon women’s singles.

“Couldn’t have asked for a better debut. That match was special in more ways than one — to be able to fulfill a childhood dream and be part of something bigger than myself, history for my country,” she said in an Instagram post.

Before her Wimbledon stint, Eala had already made waves in Philippine tennis history by becoming the first Filipina to reach a Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour final — finishing as runner-up at the WTA 250 Eastbourne Open, a professional tournament featuring some of the world’s top-ranked players.

Later this month, the Filipino tennis ace will take on a new challenge at the W1000 National Bank Open in Canada.
