After nearly four years, HAU is set to confer another recipient of Doctor of Humanities, Honoris Causa — tenth one to receive an honorary degree — to Bro. Armin Luistro, FSC, the university announced July 3.

Luistro is known as a former secretary of the Department of Education, having led the establishment of the K-12 program under former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.

Concurrent to his designation as the first Filipino Superior General of the De La Salle Brothers or the Brothers of the Christian Schools — a global Catholic congregation dedicated to providing education in over 80 countries — Luistro was also appointed by Pope Leo XIV June 25 at the Vatican’s Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, to join in overseeing and supporting religious communities in the evangelical counsels.

According to HAU’s official Facebook page, the university’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved Luistro’s conferment following the institution’s alignment to his “vision of quality education as a tool for uplifting and empowering the youth.”

The Doctor of Humanities is an honorary degree granted to individuals for notable contributions in the humanities, advocacy work, and philanthropy that benefit society, as stated in CHED Memorandum No. 19, Series of 2014.

Luistro will be the University’s 10th recipient of Honoris Causa, following Manuel Pangilinan, Washington SyCip, Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala, Christopher and Victoria Bernido, Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, Amando Tetangco Jr., Ramon Jimenez Jr., and the Pablo Virgilio Cardinal David, as the latest honoree on December 1, 2021.

Conferment ceremonies will be held on December 5 at the University Theatre.
